Is It Too Late to Start Dance Mid-Year? A Guide for Parents

Every fall, parents ask us some version of the same question: "Everyone else started in the summer. Will my child be behind?"

The short answer is no. Here's why starting mid-season works, and what to expect when you try a class.

Why mid-year starts work

The foundations repeat every week. Pliés, tendus, jazz walks and across-the-floor work are part of every technique class, all year. A new dancer isn't jumping into the middle of a story; they are joining a routine that rebuilds the basics each week. Most new dancers find their rhythm in class within a few weeks.

Teachers place the dancer, not the calendar. A free trial class lets our teachers see where your child is and recommend the right level. A 8-year-old who has never danced and a 8-year-old with two-three years of ballet shouldn't be in the same class, and they won't be.

Watching is learning. In a group class, dancers learn by watching classmates get corrected and try again. New dancers pick up a surprising amount this way, which is one reason we believe in regular group classes as the core of training.

There's still time before the stage. A dancer who starts in the fall or winter has months of training before our June recital, if participating is party of the family’s goal. Most classes welcome new dancers for the recital through February; ask us about your specific child's class.

Consistency beats a head start. The dancers who grow the most aren't the ones who started first. They're the ones who come to class every week consistently.

Which dance class should my child try?

Ages 2–5: Sweet Baby J's, our preschool program, with short classes built around music, movement, listening and first ballet, tap, and jazz steps.

Ages 5–9: our Basics classes in ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, acro and hip hop, made for new dancers. Beginner classes are designed for students this age with previous experience.

Ages 8 and up: leveled technique classes. Your teacher will recommend a level after the trial class.

How many classes a week?

One class a week is a great start. Many dancers add a second class once they're settled, and ballet paired with jazz is the combination we recommend most, because ballet builds the control that makes every other style shine.

What to expect at a free trial class

Wear comfortable clothes your child can move in, with hair pulled back. We'll let you know about shoes when you book. Arrive about 10 minutes early so your dancer can meet the teacher before class. Afterward, the teacher will share where your child fits and which class we recommend.
